The pressure to conform, to fit societal norms, and to play roles that don't align with our true selves creates a kind of existential distortion. This sense of disconnection is something many of us can relate to, as we often feel like we are living in a world that demands we become something we're not. We're shaped by external forces, bending to the expectations placed upon us, which ultimately distances us from our true identities.
Here is a series showing my visual representation of people living in a disproportionate society where they are made to become something which they are not.
This distortion is much like a building constructed with wrong proportions, an architectural marvel on the outside but dangerously unstable within. From a distance, it may seem impressive, a towering structure in line with its neighbours. But upon closer inspection, it reveals a foundational flaw: it wasn't built to last. Eventually, under the strain of time and external forces, it will crumble.
The symbolic imagery of a person's face and body in these tattoo designs reflects how we often struggle to maintain an image or form that society deems acceptable. In doing so, we risk losing our true selves, crushed under the heavy weight of external judgment. These designs serve as a metaphor for the constant push and pull between society's vision of who we should be and who we truly are.
